Paul returns
to Brazil and for the first time goes to Vitória
REVIEW: November 10 - Estádio
Kléber Andrade Cariacica, Espírito Santo,
Vitória, Brazil
After just over 18 months and the seventh straight year, Paul McCartney landed back in Brazil for five more shows, divided into two phases. Always in search of new cities, this time he chose Vitoria, in Espirito Santo state, and Brasilia, the federal capital.
Rio, where He has been two other times (1990 and 2011) the novelty was to play a smaller venue. In São Paulo (where did shows in 1993 and 2010) the decision was made because he would play the first concert in a new stadium considered to be one of the most modern in the world.
For the first show of this
final phase of 'Out There' tour, about 34,000 people on the night
of November 10, were in attendance for the opening of Kleber Andrade
Stadium in Cariacica, nearby the Victory town. The event was considered
so important that the city declared a holiday that day.
Paul was staying in the presidential suite at the Golden Tulip
Hotel in Suá Bay, priced at $2,200 per night, all afternoon
Sunday. He had asked for white sheets, no prints, and a piano
in the room.
Paul used the fitness center of the hotel with the windows fully
covered by sheets of cardstock, with his wife Nancy Shevell and
left the place in the evening for dinner with Nancy and her staff
at the Soeta restaurant in Praia do Canto.
An unexpected, last minute decision from the concert promoters
to add chairs (not numbered) on premium floor, brought some protests
among fans who had the paid for the best seats when the concert
first went on sale.
After the sound check ended, six fans who participated in a contest
for a local TV, got to meet Paul for a few minutes. They were
chosen from their vídeo messages.
Fans were treated to a little over three hours of music with no setlist surprises. At 9:03 PM, Paul opened the show with" Eight Days a Week." In Portuguese, He greeted the audience with "Good evening, capixabas" [what people born in the Espirito Santo are called]. Paul spoke several phrases in Portuguese with the help of a paper glued on stage floor. "É mara estar de volta ao Brasil. Boa noite, Vitória, boa noite, Capixabas", disse. Translation: "It's wonderful to be back in Brazil. Good night, Victoria, good night Capixabas." Another local custom was to say that the "show is pocando" (something like bursting).
In an interview with a local radio station, he praised the food at a restaurant on the beach and said he was being treated like a "baby". About the setlist, he said he hoped it to be a surprise, but in times of Internet there were no more secrets. He said that on the morning of the concert he would first work out at in a gym in the hotel, and before the show he would do little things to exercise his voice. Paul spoke words in Portuguese that he learned such as Good morning, Good night, thank you, great and Pocar. He also said he loves Brazilian music, which is a great inspiration. He had heard ancient and more modern brazilian songs. Finally, he confirmed that he prefers to go to new places he's not been to, and enjoys seeing people in the streets celebrating him.

CONCERT NOTES:
Paul's last concert of the year concluded at Allianz Parque in
São Paulo, Brazil. Though the setlist did not contain any
new songs for this last show, there was a very moving moment during
"Let It Be". Paul's production crew and staff stood
in front of the stage facing Paul and held up signs with one letter
printed on each. The signs together read, "Love is all that
matters in the end." An emotional moment for Paul and his
crew.
Three women were brought onstage during the first encore.

'You Gave Me The Answer' - Lily Cole Asks Q & A
Fans will have seen that on Wednesday November 19th Paul sat down with Lily Cole and a small group of musicians from her Impossible website to discuss his forthcoming new single 'Hope For The Future' and share his thoughts about songwriting. Paul chatted with Lily and the invite-only audience for 45 minutes, taking several questions from the musicians in attendance. (Pssst we'll be posting the full transcript from the Q&A soon!)
As you might imagine, a room made up of musicians had a great number of things they wanted to ask Paul! So after the talk finished we spoke with them and took note of a few more questions. Later that day, Paul kindly sat down with us to answer them.
Today we publish the first of these questions for November's 'You Gave Me The Answer'. To make it even more exciting, we asked Lily Cole to read out three of the questions sent in via Twitter. Watch the video of Lily asking the questions below:
Would you like to find out where the characters 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Polythene Pam' came from? Or which lyrics Paul is currently enjoying singing on tour? Read on
Question: Did Paul and John ever talk about the characters inside their songs and try to get them as real as possible?
Paul: "Some of them you would talk about, some of them didn't have a provenance; we just made them up. They didn't come from anywhere.
"But there would be all sorts of examples - like 'Polythene Pam' - who was someone John had known. There was a wild night somewhere and this girl was dressed in a lot of polythene [laughs], so she was known as 'Polythene Pam'. So she was real, baby! And, you know, I'd like to have been a fly on that wall! So she came from somewhere.
''Eleanor Rigby' came from a combination of old ladies I'd known when I was a kid. It was sort of a cross between wanting to do good work, but at the same time a fascination by these older people who had gone through stuff, that I hadn't. For some reason or another I was drawn to those people.
"There was a woman who lived near me in 20 Forthlin Road, where I used to go and get her shopping for her, just because I was on my way to the shops. I'd just drop in, I knew her. So we became pretty good friends and she was a sort of lonely old lady. But I found out things like she had a little crystal radio set, which fascinated me, because people in the war made their own little radios, "What! You can make a radio?! Brilliant!" So she would be part of the 'Eleanor Rigby' thing. I would occasionally meet other lonely old ladies, so they kind of became 'Eleanor Rigby' too.
"Some of the people mostly they were made up - but some of them did actually come from somewhere.
'''Father McKenzie' in 'Eleanor Rigby' was going to be Father McCartney. I had [sings to the tune of 'Eleanor Rigby'] 'Father McCartney, do do do do do'. And I said, 'I've got to change that.' And John said, 'No, it'll be great! Father McCartney!' I said, 'No, it's like my Dad! I can't relate to it'. So we got the phonebook out, we just went: 'McCartney, McCartney, McCartney, McCartney, McKenzie!'"
PaulMcCartney.com: "There are many stories about where the name Eleanor Rigby came from, is that someone's name?"
Paul: "It's a strange thing because there is actually a gravestone up in the churchyard of the church, St Peter's in Woolton - where John and I met on the fateful day of the fete - which apparently says 'Eleanor Rigby'. So the idea is, subliminally, I might have seen it because I would have walked through that graveyard, just as kids getting from A to B.
"But my theory - of what I can remember of it - was that I liked the name Eleanor, because we'd worked with Eleanor Bron, the actress in the film 'Help'. But I wanted to have a second name. Names are very important because, you know, like school kids, all the names are authentic. If you think back to any of your school mates - Grace Pendleton was one of my school mates it works! All those real names; and you can make up 'Charlie Farnsbarn' and it just, it doesn't work as well. It's an interesting little thing, names.
"So I was really searching around for Eleanor's second name. And I was in Bristol, visiting my then girlfriend - Jane Asher, who was working at Bristol Old Vic - and I was wondering around waiting for her to finish and I saw this shop: 'Rigby'. And I thought [clicks fingers] 'Perfect! Eleanor Rigby'. A real, nice name. It's sort of original, and yet not too far out. It just sort of fitted.
"So that's my story. But as I say later, a guy - Geoff Wonfor doing The Beatles Anthology said, 'We've found this gravestone, what do you think about that?'"
PaulMcCartney.com: "So the name might have already been buried somewhere in your mind, and then you made that connection?"
Paul: "I wonder. I don't know. My story, I definitely know is true. The other story's a little bit spooky. A 'subconscious theory'!"
Question: Do you still like all the lyrics you wrote in the past, and are there any that you don't like anymore? And, of course, I want to know why if the answer is no!
Paul: "There are lyrics I'm embarrassed by. Like in 'Rockshow' - references to 'axe' and Jimmy Page they seem a little bit dated. But they are. That's exactly what they are.
"What made me less embarrassed was when I said this to a couple of the guys in the band, Rusty and Brian particularly. I said, 'Oh my god, I can't stand that - An axe! Jimmy Page!'. I'm going, 'Oh God, it just doesn't seem right now, it seems embarrassing'. They said, 'No, I love that!'
"So it was great. I got their perspective on it, and it sort of made it alright that they didn't think it was remotely embarrassing."
PaulMcCartney.com: "We know people who still call their guitars 'axes'!"
Paul: "It's a period thing. You don't really call them that now. But you did then. So that was the embarrassing thing."
Question: What are your personal favourite lyrics you've ever written?
Paul: "There's some nice things about doing the live show now. I kind of run through the lyrics - in my mind - to sing them. So 'Eleanor Rigby' is nice, 'Wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door'. I sort of think, 'Pretty good work for a 23 year old boy!' Something like that I think, 'Yeah, that's really nice'. So I like that.
"Currently I'm liking 'Another Day'. It's just very sort of regular life of this girl. [Sings verse 'Everyday she takes her morning bath'.] It's just all what a girl might do: 'Wraps a towel around her as she's heading for the bedroom chair'. And then she goes to the office, has a coffee, finds it hard to stay awake, and it all just seems to ring true to me. But it's just another day.
"So yeah, I'd single those two out as ones that I like."
PaulMcCartney.com will be publishing more Q&As from Paul's Impossible songwriting talk soon, so remember to keep checking back!

Prince Charles, Paul McCartney and Lily Allen Toast PRS For Music's
Centennial
Late last week, their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall hosted a reception at their official London residence, Clarence House, to celebrate 100 years of U.K. collection society PRS for Music.
Sir Paul McCartney, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ray Davies, Brian May, Lily Allen, Laura Mvula and Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp were among the attendees, alongside a small selection of PRS' senior management team and key licensees. Billboard was also there to witness a jovial Prince Charles acknowledge some of the U.K.'s best known songwriters and composers.
"All of you play such
an incredibly important part in this country's artistic, cultural
and economic life, that the least I could do would be to hold
a small party to celebrate the PRS centenary and also celebrate
what all of you contribute to this country, and all around the
world," Prince Charles told guests at the Nov. 20 event.
"My wife and I salute you and thank you for the extraordinary
talent and creativity you give to our country," he went on
to say, adding: "I want to thank you for what you do economically,
culturally and artistically, and also thank the PRS, who tries
to make sure all of you get what you deserve at the end of the
day. So happy centenary."
"I always feel inspired by events like this because it reminds me that there's somebody who cares about music, artists and songwriters in this country," Mvula, a singer-songwriter, told Billboard at the reception. "I feel looked after, which is necessary when you're on this kind of lonely artistic journey, because sometimes you can feel a bit isolated."
The Sony-signed singer also explained that because she arrived a few minutes late to the reception, her meeting with Prince Charles was not quite the composed, dignified affair that she had envisaged. "I was aware that because it's cold outside, I had snot flying out my nose. My hair was kind of jagged and my shirt was half tucked in. But he was really cool," said the singer.
Ray Davies was equally effusive,
with the Kinks singer telling Billboard that "songwriting
is a very solitary existence, so it's wonderful to meet people
who are as lonely and isolated as I am."

JAUNT VR APP MAKES VIRTUAL REALITY CONTENT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC
FOR THE FIRST TIME
Completely immersive VR footage of Paul's Historic Candlestick Park concert ready for download now
Earlier this year Paul made history when he performed the last concert at San Francisco's Candlestick Park, the very same stadium that saw The Beatles last public concert 48 years ago, almost to the day.
A new app launched today by Jaunt allows fans to relive the magic of that night-more accurately experience it for the first time in a completely immersive 360-degree virtual environment offering access to Paul like never before: the Jaunt VR app puts you right there in the crowd, onstage, backstage, or even right by Paul's side in the midst of the climactic pyro, as he performs 'Live and Let Die' live at Candlestick.
In addition to his obviously peerless status as a musical legend and fearless innovator, Paul has never stopped looking for new and interesting ways to reach audiences, from his work on this year's single biggest entertainment release, the video game 'Destiny,' to this collaboration with Jaunt enabling fans to experience his music and live performance in a previously unimaginable new way.
Jaunt, the technology company behind the app, is building the hardware and software to make truly immersive cinematic VR possible. This special footage of the world's revered musician marks the launch of their first publicly available content. Jaunt is making this revolutionary experience freely available for consumers to download and view for the first time. The content is available now through Jaunt's app on Google Play for Google Cardboard and Android phones and will be coming soon to Samsung's Gear VR and the Oculus Rift.
Paul's performance of 'Live and Let Die' was filmed using state of the art technology, Jaunt's proprietary 360 degree, stereoscopic 3D cameras and 3D sound-field microphones. Viewers will experience a completely new level of immersion: complete freedom to look in any direction and experience every moment of the performance in true stereoscopic 3D with reactive, omnidirectional audio.
"The concert at Candlestick put Sir Paul McCartney in front of 70,000 live fans, and with our technology and the launch of our app, we're opening up this access to many more," said Jens Christensen, CEO of Jaunt. "We're creating a completely new medium for entertainment. This is just the first step of our broader mission to bring viewers immersive access to the latest concerts, movies, sporting events and more through virtual reality."
'Live and Let Die' is the first of these recordings to be released by Jaunt, and it also marks the very first public release of content in Jaunt's cinematic VR library.
Jaunt, which emerged from stealth in early 2014, delivers a completely new way to present and experience media. The Jaunt platform makes use of advanced algorithms and computational photography software to enable the creation of seamless, omnidirectional 3D experiences. The company will continue to focus its efforts on enabling top content producers to create a diverse array of cinematic VR experiences that will be available for consumers to view and download across many platforms.
In another upcoming McCartney-first is the aforementioned release of 'Hope For The Future' a track Paul wrote and recorded exclusively for the end credits of video game 'Destiny,' the first time Paul has ever composed for a video game.
Fans can now download Jaunt's cinematic VR recording of Paul's 'Live and Let Die' for Google Play. To download, click HERE!
Paul sprayed my foot with a
can of Odor Eaters and wiped my foot with a towel. The whole time
I and the audience are laughing hysterically.
He put my left foot on his thigh and signed the top of it with
a sharpie!!! The audience cheered. Then Paul gave me a hug.
As I left the stage Paul said to the audience, "I used to
be a serious rock man until Nina come along!!!" And then
he grinned. The audience loved it.
Two days later I got my foot
tattooed! I may be the only person in the world with a Paul McCartney
signed tattooed on my foot!
For me it was a dream come true. After 50 years of loving Paul,
I finally got a hug, a handshake and a tattoo on my left foot!!

(after "Yesterday")
I created a sign that said,
"I play a Hofner too! Can I get a pick from you?" What
an honor it would be to hold a pick that he had held.
When Paul appeared at the sound check and came to the mic to greet
us, I held up my sign. He read it aloud and said he'd see what
he could do. I was thrilled thinking he'd send one out for me!
The sound check was awesome especially hearing "Only
Mama Knows" live.
At the end, he came to the mic and asked where the Hofner sign
was. I held it up and he called me to the stage!
I made my only mistake at that moment, which was leaving my camera
in my pocket rather than handing it to someone in the audience
to take pictures!
As I stood at the top of the steps, Paul waved me over. He pointed
to the mic and asked me to introduce myself.
My hours of delivering lectures and research talks paid off as
I said that my name is Cori and I am a professor at the University
of Florida. The crowd seemed to cheer.
I research hurricanes and told Paul that I enjoyed all of the
references to weather in his music. He dug into his pocket and
produced a pick that he placed in my hand and then gave me a hug.
The pick said Fender, which is fitting since I actually practice
on a Fender jazz bass rather than my Hofner.
I was so overjoyed that I wanted
to share this dream moment with my one true love. I leaned into
the mic and declared, "Kevin, I love you!"
Paul put his arm around me and joined me at the mic. He asked
where Kevin was and if he heard that. I could barely see through
the curtain of lights.
With a great surge of adrenaline, I closed my eyes and spoke again,
"I want to marry you (Kevin)!"
Paul said something to the effect of, if Kevin said yes, he had
to say yes to the both of us. Don't I wish Paul would show up
at the wedding!
Somehow, I floated back to the audience and we left for the reception.
What a girl's dream to have a photo of their engagement
with Paul McCartney's hand on their shoulder. If anyone captured
the moment and wouldn't mind sharing, I'd be grateful! We hope
to get married in Jacksonville sometime next year. Paul and the
band are welcome although I suspect their invitations will become
lost in the mail!

The second concert of Paul McCartney on his seventh trip to Brazil was in a city in which he has performed twice : Rio de Janeiro. But a novelty for fans: this time the show would not be the huge Maracana, where he broke the world record attendance in 1990 with 184,000. It was in a small house for 15,000 people, the HSBC Arena.
The traffic to get to the place
was so intense that even Paul was delayed. Upon arrival at the
sound check in the arena, to a small audience of about 80 people,
so the first song (Oh Susanna), instrumental, Paul playing a little
harmonica, he apologized for the delay and said that the traffic
was horrible. So were a few songs, and notably without running
C'moon, common good music in soundchecks. Everything to not delay
the entry of the public, who waited in long lines outside in the
rain.
To present at Hot Sound Package audience vegetarian snacks, juice
and a lunch at which stroganoff palm stood out were served.

THE CONCERT
No surprises regarding the Vitoria show two days earlier. Paul
took the stage half an hour late (10:30 PM), due to the traffic
and the difficulty of fans entering the arena because of long
queues. With the same setlist as Vitoria, starting with "Eight
Days a Week," Paul once again learned phrases typical of
Rio: "Show de bola, Rio! (Really cool, Rio!) Aqui ta bombando!"
(There's a very cool part going on here.) speaking in regional
slang to greet the public.
The more intimate space did not diminished the excitement of the
audience who had packed the arena which was standing room only.
Two girls were invited on stage
and received autographs on the back. One tattooed live on a TV
show the next day!
As in 2011, Paul McCartney stayed at the Copacabana Palace Hotel
in Rio de Janeiro, in Suite 601, 300 square meters, with butler
service and exclusive pool of black pads. Paul and Nancy were
photographed on the balcony of the hotel where they rested and
sunbathed.
Guests and patrons of the gym inside the Copacabana Palace reported
being surprised to see Paul running on the treadmill early Wednesday
morning. The news spread and some onlookers rushed to the place,
but were blocked by security.
A group that was at the hotel asked for a "selfie" with
him, but were warned: "Do not take mobile photos!" Later,
several guests tried to hang on the balconies of their rooms to
hear the singer's rehearsals on the piano that was installed in
his suite.

New Photos: Paul and Lily Cole Discuss 'Hope For The Future'
Paul joined Lily Cole to discuss writing his new song 'Hope For The Future' with an invited audience at the office of her Impossible website Wednesday morning.
Impossible's London headquarters played host to around thirty musicians invited through Lily's website to enjoy a 45 minute Q&A with Paul where he covered subjects including writing his first-ever song for a computer game, along with sharing anecdotes of his first experiences with songwriting, and some of the tips and techniques he's learned through his career.
After speaking with Lily for around 20 minutes Paul took questions from the musicians in attendance including a 13 year old young lady who asked advice on how to turn her 12 recently written songs into an album.
PaulMcCartney.com were on hand to capture the event and
over the coming days we'll be publishing more from the songwriting
talk including more answers from Paul to Impossible member's questions,

Paul, Yoko, and George Harrison's Son Dhani Performs
It was a wild New York night, Thursday (Nov 13) at Alice Tully Hall for Lincoln Center's second annual Corporate Fund gala: designer Stella McCartney was honored with a Q&A by Jerry Seinfeld that she never could have expected, followed by a swanky dinner with vegetarian menu and lots and lots of stars. It was also a weirdly warm Beatles semi-reunion that had Yoko Ono getting hugs and kisses from Paul and Nancy McCartney, Olivia Harrison and her son Dhani, as well as Stella.
And then a surprise of Dhani Harrison, son of George and Olivia, performing "Love of My Life," an Everly Brothers song (Stella's favorite) as well as rocking "Live and Let Die" with his band, for an audience that included a five months pregnant Liv Tyler, plus Woody Harrelson, Lorne Michaels, Seth Meyers, a very pregnant Alicia Keys, actor Luke Evans, famed artist Jeff Koons, as well as Paul's in-laws John and Jodie Eastman, rock jewelry designer Loree Rodkin, Helena Christensen, and a hilarious Chelsea Handler, who emceed the evening until she had to leave to take a plane to Australia.
Handler exited the show as irreverently as she could by making a joke about Paul McCartney's infamously unpopular second wife: "I would say a break a leg but I don't want to insult Heather Mills."
Legendary (and rocking, believe me) Harpers Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey and Hearst president Steve Swartz (who's president of the Fund) put together this amazing group of people.
Meantime, the sublimely funny Jerry Seinfeld assigned to interview Stella on stage for about a half hour brought the silly. Seinfeld asked Stella a series of non sequitur questions including "What do you wear when you feel bad?" and "Why do most people look disgusting?" McCartney was up to the challenge though and gave him as good as he got. When Jerry asked her "Why do people come to my shows at Caesar's Palace wearing tank tops, flip flops and shorts?" Stella volleyed back: "Because they're your shows!"
Finally Jerry observed that Stella does not use leather or fur in her clothing. He said. "I eat only leather and fur."
Video tributes were shown from Quincy Jones, Bono, Gwen Stefani, Chrissie Hynde, Kate Winsletand of all people a bright and brisk sounding 90 year old Doris Day who praised Stella for her work in animal rights. That was quite a coup!
Dhani Harrison summed up the tone for the whole night. On stage he said he's there "to honor my big sister." Afterwards he told, "Stella has looked out for me my whole life." You know, just the idea that Paul McCartney's daughter has done that for George Harrison's son the two Beatles met when they were 15, in 1957makes you believe in the magic of the Beatles. Aw shucks!
The evening, which looks like
it will become an annual tradition, was put together by Harper's
Bazaar rocking editor in chief Glenda Bailey and Hearst mags'
Steve Swartz. I think even they were surprised how well it worked
out!

Paul McCartney wows audience in an intimate show in Rio
Presentation was the first
in an arena in Latin America.
At age 72, Paul
McCartneyseems to have much
less age and bears a striking vitality. For three hours, the artist
- Vivinho - paraded career successes of the London group and new
compositions in an intimate solo performance, the first in an
arena in Latin America.
Paul sang more than three dozen songs. And ventured in Portuguese, since 'ace' in the language, with its frequently coming to the country which filled the Maracanã to see him in the 90s for the first time. "It's wonderful to be back in Rio," said 'carioquês' pulling err.
"The last show of it on
Rio (in Engenhão) I went with my mother, now she [her daughter
to be born] came to me. I am very hormonal, I cried so much at
the last. I think I'll cry again," she said, before beginning
of the presentation. Do not wait or 'All Together Now', whom Paul
has dedicated to the younger: "This one's for the kids"
in Portuguese. Ever cried in 'Blackbird', when the stage rose
and he sang in the light of a scenic moon.
The show, scheduled for 22h, began at 22.30 (10:30pm) with 'Eight
Days a Week'. Enough time to wait for the London punctuality,
but "less" for the Rio traffic - especially in Barra
da Tijuca. In the first song, the audience still running to fill
the stands of the arena. In his first song, Paul returned to bet
on the sympathy that helped him win over the audience. Responding
to the lights that insinuated entry Idol, fans screamed. Paul
touched the microphone and responded as if he had burned hand
by the heat of the public. Familiar with the Portuguese, added:
"Hi, what's up?"
The show was nearing the end, when, in 'Live and Let Die', fireworks
erupted from the stage. The outcry only increased with the author
mending 'Hey Jude'. Was what the public expected. Posters with
"na, na, na" chorus completed. Two spectators were invited
on stage to participate in the ceremony. They were 'tattooed'
with an autograph on the back. The student Victoria Aguinaga,
18, got jealous. "I, fainted twice, which should be up there,"
said her friends. It was the first show of Paul in her life. The
other two, the parents were unable to buy tickets, which sold
out.

Paul McCartney, Carrie Underwood Star At Billionaire Ron Baron's
Investment Conference
Billionaire Ron Baron isn't
just a savvy investor he also knows how to put on a
good show.
On Friday, over 4000 investors from across the country and abroad
convened at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
The highly-anticipated annual conference, in its 23rd year,
is famous not just for big-name CEO speakers but also superstar
performers who remain a surprise until the moment they take stage.
But just like in past years, no keynote speakers garnered as much
attention as the surprise music acts. This year, it was someone
truly special to Baron himself, who admitted that he played the
artist's music at his own wedding. Legendary singer and songwriter Paul McCartney instantly fired up the audience
in the opera house when he appeared. "I love you Paul!"
One investor jumped up from her seat and screamed the moment McCartney
appeared.
McCartney joins the rank of high-profile artists who have performed
at the Baron Investment Conference. Last year Barbra Streisand
headlined. Others who have performed include Harry Connick
Jr., Celine Dion, Sting, James Taylor, Diana Ross, John Cougar
Mellencamp, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon,
Stevie Wonder and Elton John.
When McCartney played the song "Hey Jude", one of his
last songs of the day, nearly all of the 4000-member audience
stood up and sang out loud (with McCartney conducting). One attendee
said quietly after the show:"That was something quite special,
wasn't it?"
Indeed, even Baron himself thinks so. He told the attendees that
it was seeing McCartney live in Madison Square Garden that convinced
him to move to New York many years ago.
Sir Paul McCartney was paid more than $1 million to perform
at billionaire Ron Baron's New York investment conference.
McCartney and Carrie Underwood, who also collected a large fee,
headlined Baron Capital's investors meeting at the Metropolitan
Opera House Friday (Nov 7).
The stars played to 4,000 investors after a performance from the
cast of "Show Boat," including Vanessa Williams.
A source said, "It would have cost $2 million to get both
McCartney and Underwood, and that's before you've paid for their
bands."
While the artists' reps declined to comment, a spokesman for Baron
Capital said, "The entire event was paid for by Baron Capital.
It was fabulous. Paul McCartney put on a great show. There was
not one person sitting down in the whole place." He declined
to say how much the performers were paid.
Speakers at the conference, in its 23rd year, included CEOs who
head up companies in Baron Funds' portfolio. They included Edward
Woodward from Manchester United, James Cashman from Ansys and
Brookdale Senior Living's T. Andrew Smith.

Paul gives Cariacica, Vitória a shout out
Amigos Capixabas, esse show
pocou!
November 11, 2014 -- Globo.com
(translated by Google)
Paul McCartney involves audience with hits in concert
Ex-Beatle performed for the 1st time in the state.
According to the organizers, about 33,000 people attended the show, which attracted fans from different parts of Brazil.
True to British punctuality, international singer Paul McCartney took the stage to perform the first concert in the Holy Spirit, the stadium Kléber Andrade in Cariacica at 9:03pm on Monday. The presentation was scheduled to start at 9pm. The former Beatle began the concert with "Eight days a week". This is his first show of the 'Out There' tour held in Brazil this year.
The second song played by the star was "Save Us". Soon after, he greeted the audience by saying that he would try to speak Portuguese. "Oi, Vitória! "Hi, Win! Boa noite, capixabas. (Good evening, capixabas). "Tonight I will try to speak a little Portuguese," he said, changing the name of the city where it stands, Cariacica, the name of the state capital, Vitória. Excited, the public went wild with a third song," All My Loving. "
Another highlight of the show was the beginning of 'Blackbird', a moving part of the stage rose, lifting the idol which brought the house down.
Between one song and another former Beatle used and abused phrases in Portuguese. Since short words like 'thank you' and 'good night', to more elaborate phrases and slang, as when he dedicated the song 'Here today' to former partner John Lennon. "Let's hear it for JOHN!" said Paul, thrilling audiences.
At all times, the star greeted the city of Victoria and Espirito Santo. "You're enjoying it, capixabas?" Asked Paul, when then did praise the climate of the city.
Among the 37 songs from the repertoire, Paul played many Beatles hits like 'Blackbird', 'Let It Be', 'Hey Jude' and 'Yesterday'. Songs of the band Wings were also remembered by the star, who crazed public with 'Live and let die', complete with fireworks and the burning jet at the edge of the stage.
In addition to paying tribute to John Lennon, Paul devoted success 'Something' to former bandmate George Harrison and played 'Let Me Roll it' as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The singer's current wife, Nancy, was remembered with the song 'My Valentine'.
The singer left the hotel where he is staying in Victoria at 4:30pm. Just leaving, he even waved to hundreds of fans who waited to see the idol up close. Hours before the show, the line composed by fans at the entrance of the stadium has reached to the BR-262, which is about a mile away. The gates were opened at around 6:17pm.
Shortly after arriving at the Kléber Andrade, Paul did the sound check of some of the songs submitted for the public. At first, the audience consisted of only a few accredited persons. Among them, six viewers ESTV who managed to win a promotion held by the program. After the sound check, the star exchanged a few words with gifts and came to embrace one of the fans.
It is the first time that Paul
McCartney is presented in the state. He played in eight different
Brazilian states over the past four years, the South, Southeast,
Northeast and Midwest regions. The Holy Spirit was the only one
in the Southeast that had not received the English musician.

to inject some additional excitement by introducing a little competitive
element!
We've created a unique Wings Word Unscrambler game to celebrate
the classic Wings reissues of Venus and Mars and At

The aim of the game is to decipher the album song titles by unscrambling
the letters. (We've kept the theming of the original releases;
you'll have to play to see what we mean!)
The player who can unscramble the song titles the fastest will
win deluxe box sets of both Venus and Mars and At The

For nearly two years now, Paul
has been answering fan questions for the website's monthly feature
'You Gave Me The Answer'. Since launching we've received tens
of thousands of questions and it quickly became one of our favourite
items to work on.
As this week sees the reissue of the remastered Wings albums Venus
and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound -
and because 'You Gave Me The Answer' was released on the former
of the two - we thought it would be the perfect time to ask Paul
a question about the song.
We had read in the impressive liner notes of the Venus
and Mars Deluxe Edition that the song was a tip of the
hat to the music Paul's father would play on the piano at home,
but we should also hold up our hands and make a confession - we
did this for selfish reasons too!
Several of us here at PaulMcCartney.com
play instruments and we've always been delighted and impressed
by how intricate and complex Paul's arrangements can be. 'You
Gave Me The Answer' is a great example with Paul employing F diminished,
G# diminished and Bb diminished; chords not often found in pop
songs!
We wanted
to geek out a little, so our question to Paul was this:
"You have famously
talked about how you jumped on a bus across Liverpool to learn
the chord B7 from a guy who knew how to play it. How did you get
from there to using the more complicated diminished and augmented
chords that began appearing on the early Beatles albums and have
continued to be used in your songs such as 'You Gave Me The Answer'"?
We sat down with Paul in his London office just before he left
to continue his 'Out There' tour of the US. And boy, were we in
for a treat!
Paul told
us:
"It was a combination
of three ways, really. Some were from people showing them to us;
for example, Jim Gretty who was a guy from a guitar shop in Liverpool
called Hessy's. He had a guitar and was a jazz player, and I remember
him showing us a chord that was F, but it had a couple of notes
added. We called it F demented!"
Paul then picked up the acoustic guitar that lives in his office
and began playing the F demented chord. You have to really stretch
your fingers to make the chord, but Paul did it with ease.
"The chord found its way into a lot of things, like 'Michelle.'
Another chord came in via 'Along Came Jones' by The Coasters."
Paul again illustrated his point by playing 'Michelle' followed
by 'Along Came Jones' by The Coasters. (Check out The Coasters'
song when you get chance, it's a great tune!)
"Sometimes we would pick them up from sheet music, like,
'Oh! We don't know that chord'. But mainly it was just figuring
it out from listening to songs we liked. We knew that something
went up in the chords, so me and George would work it out. Buddy
Holly would use an odd chord like that - 'Raining In My Heart'
- and the second chord in there was augmented. We worked
a lot of that out by ear. There'd also be songs like 'Til There
Was You' that would have these chords in too."
Paul then told us whilst laughing, "Sometimes we'd
be working with people who knew notation and stuff and they would
say, 'Is that C diminished? Is that the chord?' And we'd look
at each other, shrug and go, 'Yes!'"
Then, almost as an encore to our question, Paul played us 'Raining
In My Heart' by Buddy Holly.
We are always aware of how fortunate we are to work with Paul,
but to get our own personal mini-concert was something else! One
of the things we love about playing music is that when something
inspires you, you want to pick up your instrument and try it out
yourself and that evening after work we all raced home to try
out the F demented chord (it's really not that easy to play on
the guitar!).
'You Gave Us The Answer' will return to normal service next time
so if you haven't already submitted your questions (send in as
many as you want!) you can do so by clicking HERE!
Venus and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound - the remastered Wings classic albums and latest instalment of the GRAMMY award-winning Paul McCartney Archive Collection are out now!
Wings are one of the most successful acts the UK has ever produced, achieving no less than 14 US Top 10 hits and 12 Top 10 hits in the UK. Following 1973's Band on the Run the mid '70s were a commercial heyday for Wings.
Venus and Mars, the band's fourth studio album was released in May 1975 ahead of the legendary 'Wings Over The World' tour. Preceded by the US Number One single 'Listen To What The Man Said', Venus and Mars hit the Number One spot in the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide to date.
At The Speed Of Sound was recorded in the midst of the same tour and released in March 1976. In the US it enjoyed the same chart success as its predecessor. Including the international smash hit single 'Silly Love Songs', the album went on to become Paul's most successful American chart album spending seven consecutive weeks at Number One. In the UK it charted at Number Two, narrowly missing out on the top spot. Sales to date exceed 3.5 million worldwide.
Scroll down to see the track listing for both releases.
As with all the Archive Collection, Paul has personally supervised all aspects of the reissues. The remastering work was done at Abbey Road by the same team who have worked on all the reissues as well as The Beatles' catalogue.

'Love My Baby' was recorded as part of the film 'One Hand Clapping'. Filmed in Studio 2 at
Abbey Road, in late summer of 1974, the documentary captures Paul
playing numbers from Band on the Run with Wings.
Paul has said of the film: "'One Hand Clapping'. It's
nice to see that one re-surfacing. It was made by a friend of
mine, David Litchfield; he produced a little magazine that was
funky (Ritz, co-edited with David Bailey). We decided that he
would shoot a very simple piece, on video. We would just go into
Abbey Road and play basically what we had rehearsed. So we went
in there and it was very simply filmed, absolute basic stuff,
and I think its charm now is that there's no pretence. It is what
it is. We just called it 'One Hand Clapping', for absolutely no
reason."
We have a fantashtic selection of photographs buried away in our archives here at PaulMcCartney.com, and we are always excited to share them with you.

was rolling, the stagehands on the left side of the stage tried
several times to get the audience started on a crowd wave. The
first couple of sections did it, but it petered out after that
and never got going.
Paul was wearing his long thigh-length
black coat, with blue jeans. The band still had their pink NFL
breast cancer awareness wristbands. In addition to his pink
wristband, Paul also had a blue autism bracelet, both on his left
arm.
After "Let Me Roll It," when he told the story
about Jimi Hendrix playing "Sgt. Peppers" in London
two days after the album came out, a girl on the right side of
the stage let out a loud scream. Paul was startled, looked
over that direction and said "Was that for London or for
Jimi"? Then he talked about Jimi using the vibrator
bar, which Paul then demonstrated on his guitar. He finished
by saying "Now he's out of tune, and he knows it", and
looks for Eric Clapton to come and retune it for him.
Before "Paperback Writer"
he noted that the guitar he was using was the one he "played
on the original record in the '60s". During the song,
Rusty did one leg kicks across the front of the stage, and
the band finished the song at the end with loud feedback by playing
their guitars in front of their amps.
Before "My Valentine," he pointed to wife Nancy in
the audience, and dedicated the song to her saying, "This
one's for you, Nance".
After "Maybe I'm Amazed," Paul did his "don't read
the signs" moment, reading a sign that said "Hi Mr.
McCartney". "Hi" Paul says back. The next
sign he read was "My husband's in the cheap seats so
I can be here (in the front row)". The last sign
he chose to read was "Trick or Treat Sign My Feet" which everyone
laughed at.
Before "We Can Work It Out," Paul asked "Who is
from Greensboro? Who is from North Carolina? Who is from
somewhere else? Welcome ya'll!"
After "Another Day" and before And I Love Her, Paul
noted, "We don't work at music, we play it".
After "Blackbird," Paul asked the audience "how
many of you have tried to learn that on guitar? You were
all wrong. Thank you!"
Before "Here Today,"
he first said that we should tell people how we feel about them
and not wait until it's too late. Lots of people then screamed "I
Love you Paul! After that, Paul then explained that the
song was written as an imaginary conversation he had never had with
John, then saying "Let's hear it for John!" That
way he was able to do his John dedication without people interrupting
it in the middle screaming, like they had done in previous concerts. During
parts of the song, you could have heard a pin drop. It was
beautiful.
Introducing "Queenie Eye," Paul said that he was
inspired to write it from remembering a street game he
played as a kid. He explained how you played the game and
said, "That's the way we had fun in those days. It doesn't
sound too inspiring to the younger generation!"
During "Lady Madonna," in addition to all the women
he saluted by putting their pictures up on the big screens, including
everyone from Aretha to Twiggy, he added beautiful pictures
of first, Linda; then, later, Nancy.
On "All Together Now," on the line where Paul sings
"Can I take my friend to bed?" Abe was shaking his head
"no".
During "Lovely Rita," a sign went up on the floor "I'm
Rita". Paul's eyes got big, and he pointed to the sign.
Wix and Abe were both playing kazoos. Abe's was
clipped up next to his mike, so he could play it and the drums
at the same time.
After "Eleanor Rigby," Paul noted that Wix was using
"every digit he has, including his toes" to play the
string portions of the song on his keyboard.
Before "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!," Paul said
that it was "the nearest we could get to Halloween. Some
songs are easy to write, some are hard". He said they
were at John's house, where he had a circus poster on the wall
and "we just wrote it down. Thank you Mr. Kite". Besides
"Live and Let Die," it was the most visually stunning
song of the night, with amazing swirling lights and lasers.
Before "Something,"
I heard a woman behind me say, "is that a ukulele"? (She
had obviously not seen this concert before.) Then Paul told
the story of "when we were little kids, George was my mate
on the bus to school. He got on at the stop after mine."
Then Paul played "Something," his touching salute to
George, which begins with Paul playing solo on the ukulele. Then
the song morphs into the full, lush, band version.
On "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da," Abe sang the "ha, ha, ha,
ha" in the background.
After "Back In The U.S.S.R.," a very loud low pitched
hum started emanating from an unknown source. It went on
for at least 30 seconds. Paul, clearly frustrated by the snafu,
did some good ad-libs while waiting for the problem to be fixed.
"This is a very interesting hum. It's Halloween arriving
early. You probably think that it's a part of the show -
we know it isn't. What's happening? It's very creepy.
We can wait it out. So there we were... 24 hours later...
still waiting. But that's okay."
Finally, after stage hands had been running around frantically
checking things, the hum was fixed!
"Fooled you, you Halloween ghosts!" stated Paul triumphantly. Finally
the show continued with Paul telling the customary "Back
In The U.S.S.R." story about performing the song in Red Square.
When the band came back out for encore one, Paul had the U.S.
flag, Brian had the North Carolina Flag, Wix had the Union Jack
flag, Abe had his tiny pirate flag, and Rusty was making waving
motions for a non-existent, imaginary flag.
After "Day Tripper," Paul went over to Rusty and told
him something. Rusty then went over to the side of the stage and
talked to the stagehands. He was mostly likely telling them
that Paul was changing the next song from "Hi Hi Hi"
to "Birthday," or he was telling them to go and get
the woman with the "Trick or Treat Sign My Feet" sign
from the audience to be brought up on stage.
To make time for the stagehands to do this, Paul did his "sing
like Paul" moment. After a bit of this, Paul was satisfied
with the audience copying his singing, and he declared "enough
of that!".
Then Paul noted all the birthday
posters in the audience, and said that the next song was dedicated
to all who were having birthdays, and launched into a blistering
Birthday.
The last song of encore one was "I Saw Her Standing There,"
instead of "Get Back." Paul's vocals were fantastic
on that, and in fact, were fantastic all night long, being able
to hit all the high notes.
After Yesterday, Paul noted the "Trick or Treat, Sign My
Feet" poster for the third time of the night, saying that
he had "promised her that he would". He then brought
the woman, whose name was Nina, on stage for her foot signing.
She came up with her tennis shoes on. He ordered her "Get
your shoes off - let's do it right!" He then proceeded
to spray her foot with something, then toweled it dry. Before
he signed her foot he exclaimed "this is a first for
me... and a last!"
Before the finale, Paul said, "This is our last North American
date - thank you, thank you, thank you! You've made it very
special for us".
Thank YOU, Paul, Wix, Abe, Brian, Rusty and crew for a fabulous
tour! See YOU next time!
A MACCA REPORT SHOUT OUT
Congrats to Nina Galpern who
got her foot signed! Her sign read: "Trick or Treat, Please
Sign My Feet." Paul signed one of her feet only after he
sprayed it with a can of "Odor Eaters"! (Nina's story
coming soon!)

PAUL McCARTNEY IN CONCERT - OCTOBER 30, 2014 - GREENSBORO COLISEUM
- GREENSBORO, NC
WITH PURE VOICE AND JOY, PAUL FINISHES U.S. LEG OF "OUT THERE" TOUR
I have attended hundreds of events at the Greensboro Coliseum in my life, although most of them were sporting events, having grown up some 50 miles from the site. In recent years, the site has been upgraded, but largely via the attached facilities, such as the Special Events Center.
The doors to the area of the Special Events Center opened about 90 minutes before the scheduled time of the concert, but the crowd was kept out of the arena for about 30 minutes. Once in the arena we had to remain in the concourse for another similar time period. As often occurs, the length of the band's sound check may have delayed the opening, but I still have never experienced such a "stop and start" entry to an event.
Paul walked on stage to a raucous
reception, and bowed to the crowd, as well as doing a bit of dancing.
For the opener, "Magical Mystery Tour," all of the lower
level crowd was standing. Paul seemed quite happy to be there,
showing a big smile.
Next on "Save Us," Paul's bass seemed to be mixed more
up front, which I thought sounded quite good.
Before starting "All My Loving," Paul said "we're
going to have a little party here tonight." Paul "Wix"
Wickens joined in on guitar, while Paul began reading signs in
the crowd. "I see we have a great crowd here tonight,"
said Paul, following the song.
Wix showed off his keyboard skills on "Listen To What The
Man Said," after which, Paul removed his jacket for "the
only wardrobe change of the night."
Following "Let Me Roll It," was the Jimi Hendrix "Foxy
Lady" instrumental ending, with Paul playing a blistering
lead guitar solo. As in previous shows, Paul told of knowing Hendrix,
noting they met in London. His story was interrupted by a girl's
scream to which he asked, "Was that [scream] for London or
Jimi?" He continued the story saying how proud he was of
Hendrix opening a show with "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club
Band," just two days after the official release by the Beatles
on June 1, 1967.
"Paperback Writer"
saw lead guitarist Rusty Anderson high-kicking across the stage.
After the song Rusty and Paul lowered their guitars in front of
the amplifiers to create feedback.
Moving to the piano, Paul noted that the next song was written
more recently, as he dedicated "My Valentine" to his
wife Nancy who was in attendance. Paul's voice was beautiful and
pure for this song, as it was for so many others during the show.
The piano was also very prominent in the song, a nice touch, as
I love hearing Paul "tickle the ivories." Noting the
piano, it was a bit more than tickled for the outstanding "Nineteen
Hundred and Eighty-Five," one of the tour highlights for
me. Slowing down a bit, Paul delivered another beautiful vocal
for "The Long and Winding Road," which received a substantial
crowd reaction. On "Maybe I'm Amazed," Paul took command
of the piano, singing his heart out in this emotional lament for
his late wife, Linda. The audience showed their appreciation with
a standing ovation at the song's end.
There were many people holding
signs in the arena, including one that read, "Trick or treat,
please sign my feet." That sign would get Paul's attention
later in the show.
After "I've Just Seen a Face," Paul asked the crowd
where they traveled from to see the show. From their reation,
it sounded like more locals were present than others from the
state, or from out of state. After asking these questions, Paul
addressed the attendees with a southern-like greeting of "Welcome
y'all."
A healthy crowd stood and sang
along for "We Can Work it Out." Moving to the 12-string
guitar, Paul followed with "Another Day," as Wix again
joined in on guitar. After the song, Paul said, "This is
fun!"
A collective sound of "awwwh" greeted the beginning
of "And I Love Her," after which Paul almost tripped
while moving to the front stage. He also banged his acoustic guitar
on a microphone. Again reading the signs, he noted one near the
stage that read, "My husband's in the cheap seats, so I can
sit here."
The front of the stage rose
as Paul played "Blackbird," which also had the crowd
singing along. A video close-up showed Paul wearing a pink NFL
wrist band, for recognition of Breast Cancer Month.
Paul's introduction for "Here Today," got a massive
response when he asked, "Let's hear it for John!" Once
again, his pure voice was ever present.
As the stage returned to its
initial level, Paul moved to the "Magic Piano" to lift
the mood with "New." Before starting the song, Paul
spoke about a childhood game called "Queenie Eye," noting,
"that was the way we had fun." The appealing mix was
also evident for "Lady Madonna," highlighting Paul's
skillful piano playing. Wix finished the horn portion of the song
with a flourish on the keyboard.
"All Together Now" quickly became a partnership with
the crowd, after which Paul said, "it's one for the kids"
and jokinglycalled it "one of my more serious compositions."
For "Lovely Rita," Wix and drummer Abe Laboriel, Jr.
joined in on kazoos.
"Everybody Out There,"
one four songs from Paul's latest release, New," encouraged
the masses to join in on the "whoa-oh-oh-ohs". Paul
lead the crowd at the song's end to sing the "whoa-oh-oh-ohs"
a cappella. Audience participation was more evident in Greensboro
than other shows I attended, leading me to hope that more people
have recognized the excellence of "New."
"Eleanor Rigby" began with a count-in, and once again
there was sizable crowd participation. A roar of approval followed
the song. Paul acknowledged Wix's work on the complicated keyboard
parts.
"Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" was introduced as "the nearest thing we get to Halloween." But, more than that, it was a near perfect version of the song, including the highlight of Paul's bass playing. He also recalled writing the song in John Lennon's living room, using the words from a poster to develop the song.
"My little mate on the
bus" was how Paul described his school days with George Harrison,
before playing "Something" on the ukulele. The song
transformed into the electric guitar version, evoking a powerful
reaction from the crowd.
Encouraging people to sing the "Ob-La-Di, Ob- La-Da,"
refrain, a cappella, Paul, Abe and the band got the crowd going.
Paul praised the audience afterwards, saying "That was good
singing."
"Band On The Run"
was notable for Rusty's lead guitar work, while his vocal was
more prominent on the next tune of "Back In The U.S.S.R."
Paul acknowledged Abe's drumming by walking over to the drums
after the song and shaking Abe's hand.
Perhaps the strangest time of the night followed, as a loud buzz
filled the building. I assumed it was an equipment issue, but
after a few minutes, Paul told the crowd that it wasn't part of
the show. It was a building issue. Being the day before Halloween,
Paul stated it was "very creepy," and may be tied to
Halloween ghosts.
After "Back In The U.S.S.R."
Paul told stories of meeting Russian government officials when
the band played that country. The audience was treated to Paul's
Russian accent as he told the story of Russian officials learning
English from "Beat-tol" records.
During "Let It Be," the audience held up cell phone
lights, which was acknowledged by Paul. The peaceful anthem gave
way to the explosive "Live And Let Die," where Rusty
pretended to faint on the stage from the explosions. Paul stood
up playing the piano in the latter part of the song. He then moved
to the Magic Piano for the heavy singalong of "Hey Jude,"
which led into the first encore.
Upon the return of the band
to the stage, with Paul, Wix, and Brian waving flags of the U.S.,
U.K. and the North Carolina state flag, Paul asked the crowd if
they wanted more. They answered with a roaring "YES!"
Paul said, "Me too!"
Brian led the group into "Day Tripper" with the familiar
opening guitar riff.
Noting there were some birthdays in the audience, Paul launched
into "Birthday" exciting the crowd. Paul ended the song
with a "thank you" and "happy birthday."
A senior citizen in front of me rocked out for the encore finale
of "I Saw Her Standing There." While a few people left
at this point, perhaps due to the difficulty of exiting the parking
area of the arena, most were still there as Wix led Paul back
on stage for "Yesterday."
After handing off his acoustic guitar to assistant John Hammel
in exchange for his bass, Paul called the lady (Nina) with the
sign "trick or treat... please sign my feet" to the
stage. She removed her shoes, then Paul sprayed her feet with
a can of Odor Eaters, and signed the top of her foot. He declared,
"This is a first and a last," after which he hugged
her, and she left the stage.
Paul asked the crowd if they
wanted to keep going and received a resounding "YES!"
He replied, "YOU asked for it!" and the band ripped
into the rowdy, "Helter Skelter."
Before the finale of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The
End," Paul said, "You've been a fantastic audience,"
but noted that it was time for both the band and the crowd to
go home. He also pointed out that Greensboro was last show of
the U.S. tour for "this year." Yes, I always look for
a clue that Paul will be back again. With spot-on vocals to the
last note, the show was complete with a spraying of confetti.
I'm already looking forward to next year!

Paul McCartney Highest Grossing Show in Greensboro Coliseum
Rock and roll royalty made a stop in the Gate City Thursday night.
Sir Paul McCartney played the Greensboro coliseum. The concert
was the highest grossing show in the venue's history--raking in
more than $2.3 million in ticket sales.
More than 15,000 fans sang along with the former Beatle as he played the hits mixed in with song from his
latest album New.
Fans came from all over to be a part of the experience.
"I go to between 10 to 12 concerts a year and I've done this
my entire life, I'm 58-years-old and that was by far the best
concert I've seen in my entire life," said fan Steve Hinson.
Coliseum officials say it takes years for them to bring in a "bucket
list" star to the area.

CONCERT NOTES:
Paul played to a sold out crowd at the YUM! Center. 'Men in black'
upgraded people in the nosebleed sections to the first and second
rows. Several of the 'upgraded' were teens and 20-somethings.
Many were more interested in doing group selfies with their backs
to the stage trying to get Paul in the background. Fortunately
for the 'real fans' 'Paul lost interest in the selfie crowd and
paid attention to the fans who cared.
Macca was very interactive with the audience, pointing, winking,
dancing and even wiggling his back side more than once. The crowd
could not get enough. The "NEW" songs went over very
well with widespread audience participation.
A highlight was an especially longer "Hey Jude" with
Paul making silly gestures while conducting the crowd during the
singalong.
His voice was remarkable and
strong. There were a few rough patches, but he overcame them quickly.
He pulled out all the stops at the encores hitting all the high
notes.
I gave the audience an A+ for their singing effort during "Everybody
Out There." They caught on right away and Paul was impressed.
"Queenie Eye" had a lot of audience participation with
people yelling "OUT!" Paul was very animated pausing
to play 'air drums' and nodding with approval to the audience.
"Let It Be" was dazzling with thousands turning on their
'smart phones' lights. There were even some who had lighters.
Paul was moved by the sight and thanked everyone for 'the lights.'
There was a new story! Paul
mentioned that Mohammad Ali was from Louisville and recounted
the story when The Beatles met him in Miami. He mentioned the
photos of them mock fighting with Ali and said that he felt he
was up to the challenge and kidded that he could take him on.
Paul read a fan's sign said that she had been waiting 50 years
to see him. He looked at her and said, "But you don't look
more than 26!"
Someone else shouted, "We've
been waiting for you, Paul!" to which Paul replied, "Hey,
I've been waiting for you, pal."
Paul did a 'repeat after me' with the audience, trying to make
his nonsense talk more difficult to repeat each time. He ended
it laughing and with a bark.
A more detailed
report will be coming soon...

Counting)
Paul McCartney owns this week's No. 1 Hot Tours ranking
(see list, below) with $10.6 million in box office revenue from
five of the final U.S. performances on his world tour. Now in
its home stretch, his Out There tour will close its final trek
through North America on Oct. 30 after concerts in 21 cities.
The tour began in May of last year and ran through November, ending
2013 ranked No. 16 on the Top 25 Tours list on Billboard's
year-end charts.
The first 2014 leg of the tour
kicked off in April and covered five Latin American markets during
the spring, wrapping on May 1. Concerts in Japan and South Korea
were supposed to follow later in May but were cancelled when McCartney
became ill. He also had to postpone seven June performances and
reschedule them for October. The five concerts in this tally were
all part of the group of rescheduled dates. Ultimately the U.S.
trek launched on July 5 in Albany, N.Y.
The summer run through American markets included performances
in five stadiums. San Francisco's Candlestick Park was the top
grosser with $7 million in sales and 53,477 sold tickets on Aug.
14.
The highest sales total among the arena dates was at Chicago's United Center on July 9 with $2.5 million.
The top arena gross in this week's tally, and second highest among the arenas during the summer jaunt, is $2.3 million at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. The Oct. 16 sold out performance in Music City drew 14,832 fans.
Since launching in May 2013,
the Out There tour has traveled through four continents during
an 18-month span, grossing more than $165 million from 1,236,325

Paul Chats with US Poet Laureate Billy Collins at Rollins College
"Doing this for the students
was such a special buzz for me. I hope it was for them too."-Paul
McCartney
At the behest of two-term US poet laureate and senior distinguished fellow at the Winter Park Institute Billy Collins, Paul spoke last Thursday night to a few hundred students at Knowles Memorial Chapel on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.
Kept secret until the morning of the event, Paul's visit prompted so much interest that students had to win tickets in a lottery system.
"I'd say, 'It's getting better all the time,' and he'd say, 'It can't get much worse," McCartney told the students of his creative chemistry with John Lennon. "I would have never thought of that."
When asked whether lyrics or music come first, he replied, "I tell students all the time, 'Look, I don't know how to do this.' Every time I approach a song, there's no rules. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the words and if you're lucky, it all comes together."
Paul described how his inspiration for 'Yesterday' came in a dream. Certain an old melody was stuck in his head, he went around humming the tune, asking if anyone knew it. "After two weeks," he said, "I claimed it."
\Collins brought up how Paul's songs have been covered by countless bands, prompting Paul's gratitude. "If someone on the street corner is reading one of your poems," he asked Collins, "is it going to bother you?"
Asked about The Beatles' musical evolution in the late 1960s, Paul drew applause and laughter recalling "a natural growing up we developed and drugs."
"At the beginning of The Beatles," he said, "you've got to remember, we were a boy band. It was all really fan-oriented. It's not a bad thing, but after a while you felt like you wanted to move on."
Paul and Collins found common ground at the intersection of lyrics and poetry. Sharing how he once read his own poems to a group of scholars in New York City, Paul admitted "It was pretty nerve-wracking" and quite different than playing to record-breaking concert crowds. "I had to respect the silence as a great thing," he said.
Paul closed the night with a performance of 'Blackbird'.
"This was a wonderful
event provided through the generosity of Sir Paul McCartney,"
said Rollins Acting President Craig M. McAllaster. "He wanted
it to be intimate and mostly for students. That's why they filled
most of the seats. It's a wonderful thing to have someone of his
stature and significance give us his time and talent to Rollins
College."

Paul McCartney talks music at Rollins College
So I go away on vacation for
a week and Paul
McCartney shows up?
Yes, my timing remains impeccable.
In case you missed it, the former Beatle stopped at Rollins College
on Oct. 23 to chat with students and faculty members about his
creative process.
McCartney's insights emerged as part of an informal discussion
with U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins, also senior distinguished
fellow at the Winter Park Institute at Rollins.
My lone consolation about being
out of town: There's really no way I would have been able to slip
into this event anyway. Announced only hours before it was to
take place, the discussion was limited to Rollins students and
faculty, with a lottery used to release the limited tickets.
It was held in the intimate Knowles Memorial Chapel on the school's
Winter Park campus.
And you thought one of McCartney's concerts was a tough ticket?
This week, McCartney's New York PR firm released quotes from the
event, so the unlucky outsiders can bask in his words of wisdom
and imagine we were there.
"Doing this for the students was such a special buzz for
me," McCartney said in the release. "I hope it was for
them, too."
McCartney answered the age-old question about what comes first,
the words or the music:
"I tell students all the time, 'Look, I don't know how to
do this,'" he said. "Every time I approach a song, there's
no rules. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the words
- and if you're lucky, it all comes together."
He illustrated the collaborative relationship he had with the
late John
Lennon by dissecting the lyrics
of "Getting Better," a song off the landmark 1967 album
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
"I'd say, 'It's getting better all the time,' and he'd say,
'It can't get much worse,'" McCartney recalled. "I would
have never thought of that."
McCartney also explained how the hit "Yesterday," one
of the most covered songs of all time, came to him in a dream.
It sounded so familiar to him, he spent weeks trying to find someone
who recognized it as an existing song.
"After two weeks," he said, "I claimed it."
McCartney attributed the evolution of The Beatles'
music in the 1960s to "a natural growing up we developed
- and drugs."
McCartney, whose stepson attends Rollins, closed the night with
an acoustic rendition of his Beatles' classic "Blackbird."
I would've given anything to hear that.
Should WINGS be nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? There's a debate amongst Beatles/Paul McCartney fans whether Wings is covered by Paul's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a "solo artist." Does Wings qualify as a band and are they worthy with a string of number one hits during the '70s? Should its band members be recognized for their contributions?
